champions league chelsea vs manchester utd

May 21st, 2008

soccer is big in sub-saharan africa, which is like saying the gates foundation has a big endowment. the english premier league has an incredibly loyal following and tonight for the first time two england clubs are in the finals of the european champions league - chelsea and manchester united. i’m not sure who most of the ugandans will be supporting. in the premier league, arsenal is by far the favorite club here, with man u close behind. chelsea and liverpool a distant third and fourth. i don’t know if all the arsenal fans will rally behind chelsea to beat man u or if they’ll go to the second-favorite team in uganda, man u. chelsea has more africans on the roster, big-time names didier drogba from ivory coast and ghanian michael essien. so that may sway the vote. me, i’m supporting chelsea.

And what an exciting game it was - ManU surviving a dominating Chelsea in the second half to finally win in the shoot-out - although one always hates to see an important match decided in this way. Chelsea certainly should have won. In a scoreless second half, after a 1-1 tie in the first half, Chelsea had two good shots hit the goal posts. Then the potential winning goal on the fifth try of the shoot-out again hit the post on the open net! ManU finally winning on the seventh round of the shoot-out with a great save by goalkeeper Van der Sar.

Although I usually root for the underdog, I have to admit to being an all-out ManU fan. I’m not a regular soccer (football here in Europe) watcher, and my allegiances go with the players I liked in the last World Cup. Renaldo, Rooney, and especially Tevez are all favorites of mine, while Michael Balak of Chelsea earned my undeserved enmity simply for being the sparkplug of the German world cup team that was always playing against (and usually beating) teams I favored.
