this morning i decided to see how many birds i could ID in our yard today. i came up with 23. + one raptor that i couldn’t figure out. 19 before i left for the coffee shop with the morning papers. i’d say that’s pretty typical - the number of birds i saw, that is. me getting up at 6:30 was not so typical. uganda has 1100 some birds and while we’ve always been animal lovers and paige has worked in the raptor center at the u of m, we definitely weren’t as in to birds as we are now. it’s easy to be a birder here, though. i probably saw as many birds today as i’ve seen in a lifetime of chickadees, grossbeaks and goldfinches in northern MN. the full list:
speckled mousebird
grey-headed sparrow
scarlet-chested sunbird
common bulbul
brown parrot
yellow-fronted tinkerbird
baglafecht weaver
black-headed gonolek
eastern grey plantain-eater
pied crow
red-eyed dove
northern puffback
northern black flycatcher
double-toothed barbet
african thrush
black kite
collared sunbird
splendid starling
broad-billed roller
hadada ibis
grey-backed camaroptera
green-headed sunbird
olive-bellied sunbird

Wow. Living outside the city (Mukono) in an area surrounded by trees, I also often see lots of beautiful birds. Makes me wish I was good with photography (and their names too).

Hi, Phil and Paige! Wow, I never knew you were so into birds. It must be amazing to see all of them. Perhaps you’d like a vacation to Stewart Island, New Zealand, another bird-watching paradise. Oyster catchers and little blue penguins…Hope all is well w/ you, email to follow. Claire
