minnesota’s northwoods are on fire. the boundary waters canoe area and homes around the gunflint trail are burning, leaving devastation in the ashes. most likely cause: a campfire. the bowen half of anderson bowen is watching the fire’s progress closely as it comes down the trail nearer to grand marais.
i came across an apropos quote in the book i’m reading right now (blindness by jose saramago, winner of the nobel prize for literature):
“obviously, many of these blind inmates are being trampled under foot, pushed, jostled, this is the effect of panic, a natural effect, you could say that animal nature is like this, plant life would behave in exactly the same way, too, if it did not have all those roots to hold it in the ground, and how nice it would be to see the trees of the forest fleeing the flames.”
