there i was, in the congo

youtube audio from an old bud dry commercial

i forgot to mention this event (well, non-event) from our trip to queen elizabeth natl park. in ishasha, the southern sector of the park, the campsites are right along a small river. the campsites and their location are worth noting for a couple of reasons. the sites are beautiful, grassy clearings set in the dense forest on the river’s edge with only minimal clearing of the trees. there are a lot of birds, monkeys and hippos right there. and, this little river is uganda’s border with the congo. the democratic republic of congo, for those paying attention - not congo, which is another country.

i thought it would be cool to go to the congo but there was no place shallow enough to walk across. well, with minimal exploring we found a bridge.

bridge to the congo
unfortunately, the bridge wasn’t un-sketchy and it crossed over a school of some 40 hippos. and the bark had been warn off the top of the log so it was probably a bit slippery. i was imagining a funniest home videos moment of falling and getting a tree trunk in the crotch, followed shortly afterwards by a fox news when animals attack moment of getting mauled by the animal world’s most prolific killer of humans, the hippo.

hippos in repose

so. no trip to the congo for me. when did we forsake the craziness of our youths and become so cautious? sigh.

Well, thank you, I am less worried about being the fuddy duddy afraid of being eaten by a hippo . . .
